My approach to family photography is not about the perfect attire. To me, the perfect smiles are the ones that happen naturally and the true beauty of your family is all in the details - The scrunched up noses as sisters giggle. The way your youngest boy twirls your hair and plays with your necklace. The way your spouse looks at you as you hold your babies.
My style of working with children for their portrait session is a bit more like a play date. I am very relaxed in my style of shooting. I like to focus on the child giving more attention to parents when we are planning the shoot beforehand. Spending time chatting with them asking them fun questions is a part of the process of relaxing them for their time with me. Allowing them to relax and be themselves produces quality images that reflect their true spirit. I don’t mind if their hair is a bit disheveled……childhood is a bit messy. If it’s windy and the wind is blowing their clothes and hair all the better! I rarely ask my clients to stop sit and smile at me. I have tricks up my sleeve that produces a much more fluid image.
Dreaming of creative child portrait sessions is where my mind can fall down the rabbit hole. Don’t you love those old-timers that can spin a good childhood tale? My child photography sessions typically are crafted out of your child’s love for something. Their love for a pet, a character, a book, or their imaginary friend are all great places to start planning a portrait session. Ideas can be boundless. What does your child enjoy most, fighting dragons, or running through fields with ponies?
Bring whatever you like your child in. Bright colors, pastels, stripes, hats ... anything that is comfortable. I love both pastels and lots of color. Matching sweaters and hats (I love hats), make incredible pictures. Pastels offer a beautiful innocence to the photograph. Consider matching an outfit to the color of your child's eyes. Your young child will determine the length of this session, but know that as children get older, session times become shorter, as their tolerance level decreases. Try to schedule your appointment during the typical 'happy time' for your child! Mid-mornings usually work best.
